Privacy policy

This policy covers the website at nz1aviation.com and the overlay software NZ1 Aviation runs during its YouTube livestreams.

Last updated: 12 October 2026. NZ1 Aviation is an aviation livestream channel operating from New Zealand. The person responsible for the decisions described here can be reached at admin@nz1aviation.com.

The short version

No account is needed to use this website, and it sets no cookies of its own. During a livestream, software run by this channel reads the stream's own public live chat so individual messages can be put on screen. Those messages are held on this channel's server only while that stream is running, and the whole lot is deleted when the next stream begins. Nothing is sold, shared, used for advertising, used to build profiles of anyone, or used to train machine-learning models.

Using this website

This site has no accounts, no sign-in, no contact form and no comment system. It sets no cookies and runs no analytics, advertising or tracking scripts.

Two things are worth knowing anyway:

  • The web host keeps standard server logs — your IP address, the page you asked for and the time — as every web server does. These are the host's ordinary operational records and are not used to identify or follow anyone.
  • Stream thumbnails are loaded directly from YouTube's image servers, so on pages that show them your browser contacts Google directly and Google receives your IP address and browser details, as it would on any page carrying YouTube content. That is covered by Google's own privacy policy, linked at the foot of this page. Everything else this site needs — its typefaces, its styling, its map — is served from this site itself, so no other third party is contacted at all.

Use of YouTube API Services

This website and this channel's overlay software are API Clients of YouTube API Services. They use the YouTube Data API v3.

By using this site or taking part in the live chat of an NZ1 Aviation livestream, you are also agreeing to the YouTube Terms of Service. Google's handling of your information is described in the Google Privacy Policy.

The API is used for exactly two purposes:

  • To fill in this website. Public details of this channel's own videos and livestreams — title, thumbnail, scheduled start time, view count, and whether a broadcast is live — so the home page can show what is on and what has been on recently.
  • To put chat on screen during a stream. The public live chat of this channel's own broadcast, so the operator can select individual messages to display, as described in the next section.

Access is by a server-side API key. This channel never asks you to sign in with Google and never requests authorisation to your YouTube account. It therefore has no access to anyone's account, subscriptions, watch history, playlists, private videos or any other non-public data, and there is no permission for you to grant or revoke. If you want to review access you have given to third-party applications generally, you can do so in your Google security settings.

Chat Control — the live chat overlay

This is the part that handles other people's information, so it is set out in full.

What it is for

During a livestream, an the livestream operator picks individual chat messages — a question, a spot, a correction, a Super Chat — and puts them on screen for a few seconds so everyone watching can see them. Chat Control is the software that makes that possible.

What it reads

It reads the public live chat feed of this channel's own livestream through the YouTube Data API. That is the same chat already visible to anyone watching the stream. It reads no other channel's chat, and nothing that is not already public.

What it stores, field by field

For each message in the chat, the following is written to a file on this channel's own web server:

  • the message's YouTube ID and the time it was published;
  • the author's public display name;
  • the web address of the author's public channel picture;
  • the text of the message;
  • public badges YouTube already shows beside the name — whether the author is the channel owner, a moderator, or a verified channel;
  • for a Super Chat or Super Sticker, the amount and currency displayed by YouTube;
  • for a channel membership, gift membership or milestone, the membership level, the number of months, and the number of memberships gifted.

No email address, no payment details, no IP address and no YouTube account identifier beyond the public ones above are read or stored. Chat messages are never matched against donations, this website's logs, or anything else.

Where it is stored

In a single file on this channel's own web server. It is not a database, it is not in a cloud service, and it is not sent to any third party. The folder it sits in is blocked from public access at the web-server level, so it cannot be fetched by visiting a URL.

How long it is kept

Only for as long as that broadcast is running:

  • the ordinary chat queue holds the most recent 250 messages, and older ones drop off as new ones arrive;
  • highlighted events — Super Chats, memberships, milestones — are held longer so they are not missed during a busy spell, up to 500;
  • when the next stream starts, the entire file is replaced. Everything from the previous broadcast, including every message, name and picture address, is gone at that point.

There is no archive, no backup of chat content, and no export. Nothing is carried from one stream to the next.

What is shown publicly

A message the livestream operator selects appears on the livestream with the author's public display name and public channel picture — the same information YouTube is already showing next to that message in the chat itself. Because it appears in the broadcast, it will also be in the recording of that stream that stays on YouTube afterwards.

What it is never used for

  • It is never sold, rented, licensed or otherwise given to anyone.
  • It is never used for advertising, ad targeting or any form of measurement.
  • It is never used to build a profile of a viewer, or combined with data from anywhere else.
  • It is never used to train or fine-tune machine-learning models.
  • It is never used to contact anyone.

Donations and Super Chats

Donations through Buy Me a Coffee and PayPal are announced on screen in the same way. When one arrives, this channel's server receives, and stores alongside the chat queue, the supporter name shown by that service, the amount and currency, and any message left with the donation.

Payment information never reaches this channel's server. Card numbers, bank details and billing addresses are handled entirely by Buy Me a Coffee, PayPal or YouTube, each under their own privacy policy. Donation records follow the same rule as chat: they are cleared when the stream changes.

Stream Control, weather and aircraft data

The other overlays carry no personal information at all. Weather and METAR figures come from third-party suppliers for the airport being filmed. Aircraft movements come from public ADS-B data — signals broadcast by the aircraft themselves and collected by volunteer-run networks — covering commercial flights only. Private, medical and charter flights are filtered out before anything is displayed.

Your rights

Under the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020, and under the GDPR where it applies to you, you have the right to ask what personal information is held about you, to have it corrected, and to have it deleted. Requests are free, and are answered as quickly as one person reasonably can — within 20 working days at the outside.

If you are not satisfied with the response, you may complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner in New Zealand, or to your own data protection authority.

Children

This website and these streams are intended for a general audience and are not directed at children under 13. No information is knowingly collected from anyone under 13 beyond a chat message they chose to send in a public YouTube chat. If you believe a child's information has been shown on stream, email and it will be removed.

Changes to this policy

If what the software does changes, this page changes with it and the date at the top is updated. Material changes will be mentioned on the channel.
